The Ravensmoor flock was founded in 1984 with the purchase of two ewes from the famous Annan flock belonging to Keith Jamieson and four ewes from Texel Society Chairman the late Charles Wright at the Castleton flock.
The first two stock rams were from Annan, Omar and Projector. I decided that we needed some Turin Keepsake blood and managed to get ewes into Annan Nimrod at Lockerbie, and eventually located Annan Northern Light in East Yorkshire and was able to buy him During this period ewes by Annan Masterpiece, Annan Nuggett, Annan Grand Champion and Annan Kite were selected and purchased.
In 1989 a trip to Holland managed to secure a small number of ewes from the Donker flock although not big sheep they have bred well for us.
In 1991 Annan U2 was purchased privately from Keith Jamieson, U2 bred very attractive females.
During 1994 the search was on for another stock ram, trips to Lanark and Malvern sales did not produce what was in my head. I needed a ram to increase size without losing character and skins. At Chelford I found what we needed but he was top priced ram next day! Crosscrake Yorkie Boy by a son of Annan Undercover and out of an Annan Jaguar granddaughter. Yorkie Boy bred beyond expectations and left good females with more scale and power than U2.
A ram lamb Ravensmoor Cherokee was retained and bred fantastic females see photographs, sadly we have lost him. Joyfield Callum purchased privately from Jimmy McKenzie out of an Annan Won o Won ewe, and followed by Raglan Express a grandson of the 7000 guinea Tophill Cracker Jack. My Dutch connection has continued with Pennine Durgendam, and Lyons Bishop owned by my friend Steve Smith Penparc flock.
Lambs for 2001 were by two new rams Llys Fastrac by Tophill Champagne and a new ram from John Morris's Green flock a son of Cowal Dynamite.
This small flock of Texels has been bred carefully to produce medium sized proper Texels that are easily fleshed and full of character. They have done well for other people, Robert Davenport bought one ewe and bred the Chelford champion out of her the following year. Audrey Hinchcliffe bought one of my ewe lambs and stood second at the Royal the following year. One man from Cumbria bought a ram lamb from me at Chelford and topped the Carlisle sale the next year, profit 700 Guineas! John Jones, Jonsland flock purchased Yorkie Boy and promptly topped Chelford and Shrewsbury sales with yearling rams at his first attempt,
Due to F&M outbreak I was unable to buy new rams in so Ravensmoor Garibaldi, son of Lyons Bishop was retained and used.
During 2002 Fachell Hammerhead was purchased at the Ruthin sale, see photographs, with the most incredible head and outlook, Sire of all 2003 lambs. The only show attended was Nantwich where I won 1st prize Ewe lamb and 2nd prize Ram lamb. Fachell Hammerhead is by Glenside Gladiator son of Glenside Footprint out of a ewe by Haddo Comet ex a Kirtle ewe by Annan Yogorra.
New rams in 2003 are Craighead Judge ARR/ARR son of the 18,000gns Cambwell Impressive, and Knock Jupiter a full embryonic brother to Impulse sire of Tophill Joe sold for a record 122,000gns. A lamb of great length, backside and appearance should suit Fachell Hammerhead daughters next year.
